Guado al Tasso

Tenuta Guado al Tasso is located in the small but prestigious DOC Bolgheri, in the upper Maremma, about one hundred kilometres south-west of Florence. The estate covers an area planted with vines of about 320 hectares, immersed in a splendid plain surrounded by gentle hills, known as the ‘Amphitheatre of Bolgheri’ for its particular conformation. The noble Della Gherardesca family began practising viticulture in the late 1600s on their land in Bolgheri, but things really began to change under Guido Alberto Della Gherardesca (1780-1854). He was passionate about viticulture. He was appointed majordomo to Grand Duke Leopold II and then devoted himself to oenology on the family estates in Maremma. The vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Vermentino; the latter is cultivated with both white and red varieties. The proximity to the sea offers a mild climate, with constant breezes that mitigate the summer heat and alleviate the harsh winter climate. The alluvial soils of the area, varying from sandy-clayey to silty-clayey rich in Bolgheri agglomerate (fine gravel), influence the character and personality of the varieties grown and give them a distinctive territorial identity.
